BCCI Exploring Saudi Arabia for IPL Mega Auction, Dhoni's Future With CSK Unclear
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the possibility of hosting the upcoming IPL mega auction in Saudi Arabia. Although no location has been finalized, cities like Riyadh and Jeddah are at the top of the list. Dubai, which hosted the 2023 auction, is also being considered but is not the preferred venue this year. The auction is scheduled to take place in the last week of November, spanning two days.
Sources reveal that while cost may not be an issue for the BCCI and IPL franchise owners—given the IPL’s reputation as one of the world’s wealthiest leagues—finding a suitable venue in Saudi Arabia has been a challenge. The pricing in Saudi Arabia is reportedly higher compared to Dubai, adding to the logistical concerns. London was initially shortlisted as a potential venue, but the UK was ruled out due to cold weather conditions at this time of the year. The BCCI is focused on securing a location that can comfortably accommodate all 10 franchise delegations and the production teams from Jio and Disney Star, who are broadcasting the event.
Dhoni’s Decision Still PendingOn the player front, the future of MS Dhoni in the upcoming IPL season remains undecided. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain is expected to meet with key CSK officials in mid-October in Mumbai to finalize his plans for the season. Dhoni recently returned to India after spending time in the United States, and his decision could shape CSK’s strategy for the season.
In a recent BCCI ruling, players like Dhoni, who have not represented India internationally for over five years, are now classified as ‘uncapped.’ This change means that franchises can retain such players for a base price of Rs 4 crore, potentially offering CSK a way to keep their star captain for the upcoming season.
